Conjoint (xylem and phloem on the same radius) rules out roots, and open (cambium present) rules out monocots — leaving the dicot stem as the only match.

Vascular bundles are classified along two separate axes, and a bundle can only be assigned correctly by checking both:

  • Arrangement: in roots, xylem and phloem alternate around different radii, which is called a radial arrangement — this is never called conjoint. In stems and leaves, xylem and phloem sit together along the same radius, which is the conjoint arrangement.
  • Cambium: dicot bundles retain a strip of cambium between the xylem and phloem, so they can go on producing secondary xylem and phloem — these are called open. Monocot bundles have no such cambium and cannot add secondary tissue, so they are called closed. …
