An enzyme is a (mostly protein) biological catalyst that greatly speeds up a specific chemical reaction while remaining unchanged itself; e.g., pepsin.

Almost every reaction in a living cell is catalysed by an enzyme. An enzyme is defined as a biocatalyst — typically a globular protein — that increases the rate of a specific biochemical reaction by lowering its activation energy, without being permanently altered or used up in the process, so the same enzyme molecule can catalyse the reaction repeatedly.

Enzymes are highly specific: each enzyme generally acts on one substrate or one type of chemical bond, because its active site has a shape complementary to that particular substrate.
