Glomerulonephritis is inflammation of the glomeruli of the kidney, disrupting the first (filtration) step of urine formation.

Each nephron in the kidney begins with a glomerulus — a tuft of capillaries inside the Bowman's capsule — where blood is filtered under pressure to form the initial filtrate. Glomerulonephritis is inflammation of these glomeruli, often triggered by an infection elsewhere in the body (classically a streptococcal throat infection) that leads to an immune-mediated inflammatory reaction damaging the glomerular capillaries.
