Certain period-2 elements resemble the period-3 element diagonally adjacent to them (e.g. Li-Mg, Be-Al, B-Si) because of similar charge-to-size ratios.

Step 1 -- what it means: Some elements of the second period show close similarity in properties with elements of the third period that lie diagonally below and to the right of them in the periodic table (Li resembles Mg, Be resembles Al, B resembles Si), rather than resembling the elements directly below them in their own group.

Step 2 -- why it happens: Down a group, atomic/ionic size increases (more shells) but along a period, size decreases (increasing nuclear charge). Moving diagonally (one period down, one group right) combines both effects: the size-increase from moving down roughly cancels the size-decrease from moving right, leaving atoms/ions of comparable size. …
