The period number of an element equals the principal quantum number (n) of its outermost (valence) shell.

The modern periodic table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number, with a new period starting each time a new principal energy level (shell) begins to be filled. For example, Period 2 elements (Li to Ne) all have electrons filling up to n = 2, and Period 3 elements (Na to Ar) fill up to n = 3. So the period number is numerically the same as the principal quantum number of the valence shell.
