Sodium couples the two alkyl iodides pairwise (Wurtz reaction), giving three alkanes: 2,5-dimethylhexane, 2,4-dimethylpentane and 2,3-dimethylbutane.

The Wurtz reaction with a mixture of halides

In the Wurtz reaction sodium removes the halogen from two alkyl halides and joins the two alkyl groups by a new C-C bond. When two different halides are present, every possible pairing occurs - each halide with itself and the two with each other - so a mixture of three alkanes results.

The two halides here are:

  • 1-iodo-2-methylpropane (isobutyl iodide), (CH3)2CH-CH2-I\text{(CH}_3\text{)}_2\text{CH-CH}_2\text{-I}
  • 2-iodopropane (isopropyl iodide), (CH3)2CH-I\text{(CH}_3\text{)}_2\text{CH-I}

The three coupling products

1. Isobutyl + isobutyl

2 (CH3)2CH-CH2-I+2 Na⟶(CH3)2CH-CH2-CH2-CH(CH3)2+2 NaI2\,\text{(CH}_3\text{)}_2\text{CH-CH}_2\text{-I} + 2\,\text{Na} \longrightarrow \text{(CH}_3\text{)}_2\text{CH-CH}_2\text{-CH}_2\text{-CH(CH}_3\text{)}_2 + 2\,\text{NaI}

The product CH3-CH(CH3)-CH2-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH3\text{CH}_3\text{-CH(CH}_3\text{)-CH}_2\text{-CH}_2\text{-CH(CH}_3\text{)-CH}_3 is a hexane chain with methyls at C-2 and C-5: 2,5-dimethylhexane.

2. Isobutyl + isopropyl (cross-coupling)

(CH3)2CH-CH2-I+(CH3)2CH-I+2 Na⟶(CH3)2CH-CH2-CH(CH3)2+2 NaI\text{(CH}_3\text{)}_2\text{CH-CH}_2\text{-I} + \text{(CH}_3\text{)}_2\text{CH-I} + 2\,\text{Na} \longrightarrow \text{(CH}_3\text{)}_2\text{CH-CH}_2\text{-CH(CH}_3\text{)}_2 + 2\,\text{NaI}

The product CH3-CH(CH3)-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH3\text{CH}_3\text{-CH(CH}_3\text{)-CH}_2\text{-CH(CH}_3\text{)-CH}_3 is a pentane chain with methyls at C-2 and C-4: 2,4-dimethylpentane.

3. Isopropyl + isopropyl

2 (CH3)2CH-I+2 Na⟶(CH3)2CH-CH(CH3)2+2 NaI2\,\text{(CH}_3\text{)}_2\text{CH-I} + 2\,\text{Na} \longrightarrow \text{(CH}_3\text{)}_2\text{CH-CH(CH}_3\text{)}_2 + 2\,\text{NaI} …
