Changes in government policy (such as the 1991 economic reforms — liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation) transformed the business environment in India by increasing competition, raising customer expectations, accelerating technological change, demanding changes in business practices, and reducing the earlier dependence of private firms on the public sector.

1. Increasing competition: Liberalisation opened Indian markets to private domestic companies and removed many licensing restrictions, while globalisation allowed foreign firms to enter India; together these sharply increased the number and intensity of competitors Indian businesses had to face, compared to the protected, licence-controlled era before the reforms.

2. More demanding customers: With more players competing for the same customers, and greater choice available, customers became far more demanding — expecting better quality, lower prices, and more options — forcing firms to become genuinely customer-focused rather than simply producer-focused.

3. Rapidly changing technological environment: Opening up the economy also brought in faster technology transfer and adoption, forcing businesses to continuously upgrade their processes and products to stay competitive, instead of operating with outdated technology for years as some did before the reforms.

4. Necessity for change: In the pre-reform era, firms operating in a protected, licence-controlled market could survive for years with little change in products or methods; post-reform, firms have had to continuously adapt and innovate just to remain relevant, since standing still now quickly means losing ground to more agile competitors.

5. Need for developing human resources: The more demanding, technology-driven, competitive environment created a need for a skilled, adaptable, well-trained workforce, pushing firms to invest more seriously in training and developing their employees.
