The redressal agency depends on the value of goods/services in question (District up to ₹1 crore, State above ₹1 crore up to ₹10 crore, National above ₹10 crore); an appeal against a State Commission order goes to the National Commission.

Under the three-tier consumer dispute redressal machinery, cases are filed based on the value of the goods/services and compensation claimed:

  • District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission — complaints where the value does not exceed ₹1 crore.
  • State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission — complaints where the value is more than ₹1 crore but does not exceed ₹10 crore; it also hears appeals against District Commission orders.
  • National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission — complaints where the value exceeds ₹10 crore; it also hears appeals against State Commission orders.
