Marketing mix is the set of four controllable tools — Product, Price, Place and Promotion — that a firm combines in the right proportion to satisfy its target market and achieve its own marketing objectives.

Meaning: Marketing mix refers to the planned combination of the four controllable elements of marketing a firm has at its disposal, blended together to produce the response it wants from its target customers. Getting the right "mix" means the four elements must be consistent with each other and with the overall marketing strategy.

Components of marketing mix:

  1. Product: Decisions about what the firm will actually offer — its design, quality, features, branding, packaging and labelling — to satisfy the customer's needs.

  2. Price: Decisions about how much to charge for the product, considering its cost, the demand for it, competition, and the firm's own pricing objectives — price is the only element of the mix that directly generates revenue, the rest are costs.
