In Kerala Plus Two (DHSE) Commerce marketing, the marketing mix is the combination of the four controllable elements — Product, Price, Place and Promotion (the 4 P's) — that a firm uses to satisfy customers and achieve its marketing objectives. Each is explained below.

Marketing mix refers to the set of marketing tools that a firm uses to pursue its marketing objectives in the target market. These tools are classified into four broad groups, popularly known as the four P's of marketing:

  1. Product: A product is the bundle of goods, services or ideas offered to the market to satisfy customer needs and wants. This element covers decisions about the product's features, quality, design, brand name, packaging, labelling, variety, warranty and after-sales service. The product is the central element, because the other three P's exist to support it. Marketers must offer the right product with the right features and benefits that the customer values.

  2. Price: Price is the amount of money customers pay to obtain the product. This element involves decisions about the pricing objectives, pricing methods, discounts, allowances and credit terms. Price is a very sensitive element as it directly affects demand, sales volume, competition and the firm's profits, so it must be set carefully in relation to cost, demand and competitors' prices.

  3. Place (Physical distribution): Place refers to the activities that make the product available to customers at the right place and time. It includes decisions about channels of distribution (wholesalers, retailers, agents), transportation, warehousing, inventory management and order processing. Effective place decisions ensure the product reaches the target customers conveniently.
