Unemployment in India stems largely from population pressure, a shrinking formal sector, seasonal agricultural work, and a skills mismatch.

1. Rapid population growth: India's labour force has grown faster than the economy's capacity to create new jobs, leading to a persistent excess supply of labour relative to demand.

2. Slow growth of the organised (formal) sector: Formal-sector employment, which offers job security and social protection, has grown very slowly, forcing most of the workforce into low-paying, insecure informal/unorganised sector jobs, with disguised unemployment and underemployment rather than full employment.

3. Seasonal character of agriculture: Since the majority of India's workforce remains dependent on agriculture, and farming is seasonal, workers are often employed only during sowing and harvesting seasons, remaining unemployed (or underemployed) for the rest of the year.

4. Slow pace of industrialisation and infrastructure development: Insufficient growth of manufacturing and the infrastructure (power, transport) needed to support it has limited the economy's capacity to absorb surplus agricultural and rural labour into higher-productivity non-farm jobs.
