The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) is the percentage of the total population that is actually employed (working). Over recent decades in India:
- Overall WPR has remained low and relatively stagnant — a smaller share of India's population is actually working compared to many other developing countries, partly reflecting a large share of dependents (children, elderly, students) and discouraged/non-participating adults.
- Rural WPR is higher than urban WPR, since rural areas offer more avenues for low-productivity self-employment (small farms, casual labour) that absorb workers, even if these jobs are not very productive.
