On the eve of independence India inherited a broken economy — a stagnant agriculture, a stunted industrial sector, mass poverty and unemployment, a backward population profile and a colonial trade pattern. Overcoming these was the country's most crucial set of economic challenges.

The concept: an economy to be rebuilt

Two centuries of colonial rule left India's economy backward, stagnant and dependent. At the moment of independence, the country therefore faced a series of interlinked economic challenges that had to be tackled to set the nation on the path of development.

The most crucial challenges

1. A stagnant agriculture

Agriculture was the mainstay of most people yet was stagnant and had very low productivity, ruined by exploitative land systems, primitive technology and the absence of irrigation. Reviving it was essential to feed the people.

2. A weak industrial base

Industry was narrow and underdeveloped — handicrafts had been destroyed, modern industry was small, there was hardly any capital goods industry, and much of it was foreign-controlled. Building a strong industrial sector was a major challenge.

3. Widespread poverty and unemployment

The destruction of handicrafts and the stagnation of agriculture left mass unemployment and deep poverty, with people lacking even basic necessities.
