DNA fragments separated by gel electrophoresis are stained with ethidium bromide and made visible as glowing bands under UV light.

After DNA fragments have been separated by size through gel electrophoresis (in an agarose gel, under an electric field, with smaller fragments migrating faster/further towards the positive electrode), they are not visible to the naked eye on their own, since DNA is colourless.
