The stratosphere contains a natural layer of ozone (O3) gas that absorbs most of the harmful ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation from sunlight, shielding living organisms on Earth's surface from its damaging effects (e.g., skin cancer, cataracts, and harm to plants and aquatic life).
Mechanism of ozone-layer depletion: Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) — synthetic chemicals once widely used as refrigerants and aerosol propellants — are highly stable and, being volatile, gradually diffuse up into the stratosphere. There, high-energy UV radiation breaks the C–Cl bond in the CFC molecule, releasing a highly reactive chlorine free radical. This chlorine radical reacts with an ozone molecule, converting it into ordinary oxygen (O2) and chlorine monoxide (ClO); the ClO can further react with a free oxygen atom to regenerate the chlorine radical, which can go on to destroy thousands more ozone molecules in this catalytic chain reaction before it is eventually removed from the stratosphere. This progressi …
