The Hardy-Weinberg principle describes a state of genetic equilibrium in which allele and genotype frequencies do not change across generations unless disturbed by evolutionary forces.

The Hardy-Weinberg principle states that, in a sufficiently large, randomly mating population that is free from mutation, natural selection, migration (gene flow), and genetic drift, the frequencies of alleles and genotypes remain constant from one generation to the next — the population is said to be in genetic (Hardy-Weinberg) equilibrium. For a gene with two alleles of frequencies pp and qq (where p+q=1p+q=1), the genotype frequencies in the population are given by the binomial expansion p2+2pq+q2=1p^2+2pq+q^2=1, representing the homozygous dominant, heterozygous, and homozygous recessive classes respectively. Any deviation of observed genotype frequencies from those predicted by this equation indicates that evolution (a change in allele frequency) is occurring, driven by one or more of the disturbing factors listed above.
