The Hardy-Weinberg principle describes a hypothetical genetic equilibrium, and real populations deviate from it when mutation, selection, migration, or drift act on them.

The Hardy-Weinberg principle states that in a large, randomly mating population, free from evolutionary influences such as mutation, natural selection, migration, and genetic drift, the allele frequencies (p and q) and genotype frequencies (p2,2pq,q2p^2, 2pq, q^2) remain constant from generation to generation, satisfying the equation p2+2pq+q2=1p^2+2pq+q^2=1. Such a population is said to be in genetic (Hardy-Weinberg) equilibrium, and no evolution is occurring.
