Incomplete dominance occurs when neither allele of a gene pair is completely dominant over the other, so the heterozygote shows a blended, intermediate phenotype; the classic textbook example is flower colour in the four-o'clock plant, Mirabilis jalapa.

What is incomplete dominance?

Incomplete dominance is a form of inheritance in which the F1 hybrid (heterozygote) does not resemble either parent completely but instead exhibits a phenotype that is intermediate between the two parental phenotypes, because neither allele can completely mask the expression of the other.

Cross in Mirabilis jalapa (red × white flower)

Let RR = allele for red pigment production, rr = allele for no pigment (white). Since dominance is incomplete, RrRr produces an intermediate (pink) phenotype rather than pure red.

P generation: RRRR (red) ×\times rrrr (white)

Gametes: RR from red parent; rr from white parent

F1 generation: all RrRr — phenotype: pink (intermediate)

F1 ×\times F1 (self-cross, Rr×RrRr \times Rr):

Gametes from each parent: RR and rr

RRrr
RRRRRR (red)RrRr (pink)
rrRrRr (pink)rrrr (white)

F2 genotypic ratio: 1 RR:2 Rr:1 rr1\ RR : 2\ Rr : 1\ rr

F2 phenotypic ratio: 1 red:2 pink:1 white1\ \text{red} : 2\ \text{pink} : 1\ \text{white}
