In snapdragon, RR (red) x rr (white) gives pink F1 (Rr); F2 = 1 red : 2 pink : 1 white, where the phenotypic ratio equals the genotypic ratio because heterozygotes show an intermediate phenotype.

Incomplete dominance is a pattern of inheritance in which the F1 hybrid shows a phenotype intermediate between the two parents, because neither allele is completely dominant over the other. It is well shown by flower colour in the snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus, dog-flower).

Parental (P) cross:

  • Red-flowered parent: genotype RR
  • White-flowered parent: genotype rr
  • Gametes: R (from red) and r (from white)

F1 generation:

  • All offspring are Rr
  • Phenotype = pink (intermediate between red and white) — this is incomplete dominance, as the single R allele cannot produce enough pigment for full red colour.

F2 generation (self-pollination of F1, Rr x Rr):

Using a Punnett square with gametes R and r from each parent:

Rr
RRRRr
rRrrr
  • Genotypes: 1 RR : 2 Rr : 1 rr
  • Phenotypes: 1 red (RR) : 2 pink (Rr) : 1 white (rr) …
