Sutton and Boveri's chromosomal theory linked Mendel's abstract 'factors' to the physical behaviour of chromosomes during meiosis, providing a cellular basis for the laws of inheritance.

The chromosomal theory of inheritance proposes that genes, the units of heredity described by Mendel, are located on chromosomes, and that the pattern of transmission of chromosomes during meiosis and fertilization explains the pattern of inheritance of traits described by Mendel's laws. This theory was independently proposed around 1902 by Walter Sutton and Theodor Boveri, who both noted striking parallels between the behaviour of chromosomes during meiosis (their pairing and segregation into gametes) and the segregation and independent assortment of Mendelian factors — for example, chromosomes exist in pairs (like Mendel's factor pairs), homologous chromosomes segregate during meiosis (paralleling the law of segregation), and different chromosome pairs assort independently of one another (paralleling the law of independent assortment).
