After Mendel's laws were rediscovered around 1900, scientists sought a physical, cellular basis for the abstract 'factors' (genes) Mendel had proposed. Working independently, Walter Sutton (studying grasshopper cells) and Theodor Boveri (studying sea urchin cells) noticed a striking parallel between the behaviour of Mendelian factors and the behaviour of chromosomes during meiosis:
- Chromosomes, like Mendelian factors, occur in pairs in diploid cells.
- The two members of a chromosome pair separate from each other during meiosis (segregation), just as the two alleles of a gene segregate.
- Different chromosome pairs assort independently of one another, just as Mendel's factors for different traits assort independently.
- Fusion of male and female gametes restores the paired condition, in both chromosome number and factor number. …
