India was one of the first nations globally to launch national-level programs aimed at achieving reproductive health, initiating these efforts in the 1950s.

Reproductive health is a cornerstone of a healthy society, encompassing not just the absence of disease in the reproductive organs, but a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system. It involves people having the ability to have a responsible, satisfying, and safe sex life, and the freedom to decide if, when, and how often to do so. For a nation, addressing reproductive health is crucial for controlling population growth, reducing maternal and infant mortality, preventing sexually transmitted infections, and empowering individuals to make informed choices about their bodies and families.

Recognizing this profound significance, India took a pioneering step on the global stage. Our country was among the very first in the world to initiate action plans and programs at a national level with the explicit social goal of attaining total reproductive health. This foresight demonstrated a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between individual well-being and national progress.

These groundbreaking programs, initially termed 'Family Planning', were launched in 1951. This marked the beginning of a concerted, government-backed effort to address various aspects of reproductive health across the vast and diverse population of India. The primary objective was to encourage smaller families and provide information and services related to contraception.
