IVF fertilizes egg and sperm outside the body and then transfers the resulting embryo into the woman's reproductive tract to establish a pregnancy.

In-vitro fertilization (IVF), popularly known as the 'test-tube baby' programme, is an assisted reproductive technology used to help couples facing certain types of infertility.

Process:

  1. The female partner is given hormonal treatment to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature ova, which are then surgically retrieved from the ovaries.
  2. Sperm are collected from the male partner (or a donor).
  3. Fertilization of the ova by the sperm is carried out outside the body, in a controlled laboratory environment ('in vitro', literally 'in glass'), either by simply mixing egg and sperm together or, in cases of severe male infertility, by directly injecting a single sperm into the egg (ICSI).
