Phenol and ethanol can be distinguished by the neutral ferric chloride test — phenol (and phenols generally) gives a characteristic violet/purple colour due to complex formation, whereas an aliphatic alcohol like ethanol shows no such colour.

Test — Neutral FeCl3FeCl_3 test:

Add a few drops of neutral (i.e. not acidified) aqueous ferric chloride solution to each sample:

  • Phenol reacts with Fe3+Fe^{3+} to form a coloured iron–phenolate coordination complex, giving an immediate violet colouration:

6 C6H5OH+FeCl3→[Fe(OC6H5)6]3−+6H++3Cl−  (violet complex)6\, C_6H_5OH + FeCl_3 \rightarrow [Fe(OC_6H_5)_6]^{3-} + 6H^+ + 3Cl^- \ \ (\text{violet complex})

  • Ethyl alcohol (C2H5OHC_2H_5OH) does not have the aromatic ring/enolic character needed for this complexation and gives no colour change (the solution stays the pale yellow of FeCl3FeCl_3). …
