Question of 101

Q.(a) Give one example of a complex showing linkage isomerism. (1 mark)

(b) Write the IUPAC name of the complex [Cr(NH3)3(H2O)3]Cl3[Cr(NH_3)_3(H_2O)_3]Cl_3. (1 mark) OR Explain, on the basis of valence bond theory, why [NiCl4]2−[NiCl_4]^{2-} is paramagnetic while [Ni(CO)4][Ni(CO)_4] is diamagnetic though both are tetrahedral.

(a) Linkage isomers of an ambidentate-ligand complex like the nitro/nitrito cobalt-ammine pair; (b) the IUPAC name follows alphabetical ligand order with aqua/ammine and the Roman-numeral oxidation state.

(a) Linkage isomerism example

Linkage isomerism arises when an ambidentate ligand (one having two different donor atoms) can bind to the metal through either donor atom, giving two distinct compounds with the same formula. The classic textbook pair is the nitrite ion, NO2−NO_2^-, in a cobalt(III) ammine complex:

[Co(NH3)5(NO2)]Cl2 (nitro isomer, N-bonded, yellow-brown)[Co(NH_3)_5(NO_2)]Cl_2 \ (\text{nitro isomer, N-bonded, yellow-brown})

[Co(NH3)5(ONO)]Cl2 (nitrito isomer, O-bonded, red)[Co(NH_3)_5(ONO)]Cl_2 \ (\text{nitrito isomer, O-bonded, red})

(Another valid example: thiocyanate complexes, −SCN-SCN vs −NCS-NCS.)

(b) IUPAC name of [Cr(NH3)3(H2O)3]Cl3[Cr(NH_3)_3(H_2O)_3]Cl_3

Naming rules for coordination compounds: ligands are named in alphabetical order (using the ligand name, ignoring multiplying prefixes) before the metal name, and the metal's oxidation state is given in Roman numerals in parentheses; anionic counter-ions are named last.

  • NH3NH_3 = ammine (×3 → triammine)
  • H2OH_2O = aqua (×3 → triaqua)
  • Alphabetically, "ammine" comes before "aqua", so ammine is cited first.
  • Oxidation state of CrCr: the complex is [Cr(NH3)3(H2O)3]3+[Cr(NH_3)_3(H_2O)_3]^{3+} balanced by 3 Cl−3\,Cl^-, and since NH3NH_3/H2OH_2O are neutral, CrCr must be +3+3.

Full name: triamminetriaquachromium(III) chloride.
