In normal adjustment the objective forms a real image at its focus, which coincides with the eyepiece's focus; the magnification is the ratio of their focal lengths.

Setup

For a distant object, the objective (focal length fof_o) forms a real, inverted image at its focal plane. In normal adjustment, this image lies exactly at the focal point of the eyepiece (focal length fef_e), so the eyepiece views it and produces a final image at infinity.

Step 1 — Angle subtended without telescope

The object (at infinity) subtends angle α\alpha at the unaided eye, related to the size hh of the intermediate image formed by the objective: α≈h/fo\alpha \approx h/f_o.

Step 2 — Angle subtended with telescope
