An optical fibre guides light by repeated total internal reflection between a high-index core and a lower-index cladding, and is widely used in telecommunications and medical imaging.

Solution:

An optical fibre is a thin, flexible strand made of high-quality transparent glass (or quartz), consisting of an inner core of relatively higher refractive index, surrounded by an outer cladding of slightly lower refractive index.

Principle of working: When light is launched into one end of the fibre at a suitable angle, it strikes the core–cladding interface at an angle of incidence greater than the critical angle for that interface. It therefore undergoes total internal reflection at the interface instead of refracting out. This reflected ray again strikes the opposite core–cladding boundary at the same angle and undergoes total internal reflection again, and so on. In this way the light ray repeatedly bounces along the length of the fibre by successive total internal reflections and emerges almost undiminished at the other end, even if the fibre is bent (as long as the bending is not too sharp).
