Total internal reflection occurs only when light tries to leave a denser medium for a rarer one at an angle steep enough to exceed the critical angle; it underlies optical-fibre communication. The alternative question is about what makes two light sources coherent.

Conditions for total internal reflection

  1. The ray of light must be travelling from an optically denser medium to an optically rarer medium (e.g. from glass/water into air).
  2. The angle of incidence ii in the denser medium must be greater than the critical angle θc\theta_c for that pair of media (where sin⁡θc=1/n\sin\theta_c = 1/n, nn being the refractive index of the denser medium with respect to the rarer one).

When both are satisfied, all of the incident light is reflected back into the denser medium — none is transmitted/refracted.

Technological application: Optical fibres, used in fibre-optic communication (and endoscopes), rely entirely on repeated total internal reflection of light along a thin glass/quartz core of higher refractive index surrounded by cladding of lower refractive index.
