Air path: nose → pharynx → larynx → trachea → bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli. Its jobs are breathing and gas exchange (O₂ in, CO₂ out).

Structure and path of air

  1. Nose (nasal cavity) — air enters and is filtered, warmed and moistened.
  2. Pharynx (throat) — a shared passage for air and food.
  3. Larynx (voice box) — houses the vocal cords and guards the airway during swallowing.
  4. Trachea (windpipe) — a tube kept open by cartilage rings that carries air toward the lungs.
  5. Bronchi — the trachea divides into the right and left bronchi, one to each lung.
  6. Bronchioles — the bronchi branch into finer and finer tubes.
  7. Alveoli — the bronchioles end in millions of tiny, thin-walled air sacs wrapped in capillaries.

Main functions

  • Breathing (pulmonary ventilation) — the coordinated movement of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles enlarges and shrinks the chest, drawing air in (inspiration) and pushing it out (expiration). …
