Coordination is the force that integrates and harmonises the efforts of different people and departments towards a common goal — without it, even well-planned, well-organised work can pull in different directions.

As an organisation grows, work is divided among many specialists and departments (production, finance, marketing, HR) — each doing its own job well in isolation does not automatically mean the organisation as a whole functions smoothly. Coordination is the force that synchronises and unifies these separate efforts. Its importance:

  1. Integrates group efforts — coordination unifies the different, often conflicting, interests of individuals and departments into one united effort towards the organisation's common objective.

  2. Gives direction to efforts — it ensures unity of action even when different people are performing different interdependent tasks, so everyone's work fits together like pieces of a puzzle.

  3. Reduces conflicts — by aligning individual/departmental goals with overall organisational goals, coordination prevents duplication of effort and interdepartmental conflict (e.g. production making more than marketing can sell).
