Planning, while valuable, suffers from limitations such as reducing initiative and involving real cost/time.

Two important limitations of planning are:

  1. Planning reduces initiative/creativity — once a plan is laid down, managers at lower levels are expected to implement it rather than experiment with alternative, possibly better, courses of action. Employees may simply follow the plan mechanically instead of using their own initiative to respond to a changing situation, which can make the organisation rigid.
