Scientific management is Taylor's approach of replacing guesswork with scientifically-tested methods for maximum efficiency; its core principles are science over rule-of-thumb, harmony, cooperation, and worker development.

Definition: Scientific management, as defined by F.W. Taylor, is 'the art of knowing exactly what you want your men to do and seeing that they do it in the best and cheapest way.' It is the systematic study of work methods and worker capability in order to improve organisational efficiency.

Principles of Scientific Management:

  1. Science, not rule-of-thumb — every job should be analysed scientifically to find the one best way of doing it, replacing traditional 'rule of thumb' methods based on personal judgement or experience.

  2. Harmony, not discord — there should be complete harmony between management and workers rather than conflict; both should recognise their mutual dependence and work towards a common goal (a 'mental revolution' in attitude).

  3. Cooperation, not individualism — management and workers should cooperate so that whatever is being done is in the interest of each other; replacing competition between them with mutual trust and team effort.
