Taylor's key techniques of scientific management: functional foremanship, standardisation, method/time/motion/fatigue study, and differential piece-wage.

  1. Functional Foremanship — Taylor proposed separating planning work from doing (execution) work, with eight different specialised foremen (four for planning, four for execution) each overseeing one specific function rather than one foreman supervising everything.

  2. Standardisation and simplification of work — standardisation sets uniform standards for raw materials, tools, equipment, working conditions and methods, while simplification eliminates unnecessary product varieties, sizes and designs — both reduce cost and improve quality.

  3. Method study — finding the one best way of performing a given task so as to minimise cost and maximise customer satisfaction with quality, considering factors like cost, consistency and effectiveness of material/machinery/human effort.

  4. Motion study — studying the movements performed by a worker while doing a task, and eliminating unnecessary, wasteful or fatigue-causing motions, keeping only the ones that are truly productive.

  5. Time study — determining the standard time a qualified, well-trained worker should take to complete a specified task, which is then used to fix a fair day's work and output targets.
