India's trade direction shifted from a few developed/bloc countries to a far more diversified set of partners, especially after the 1991 reforms.

1. Pre-1991 (inward-looking period): In the early decades after independence, India's foreign trade was concentrated with a small set of partners — chiefly developed capitalist countries like the United Kingdom and the United States for exports of traditional items (tea, jute, cotton textiles), alongside significant trade with the Soviet Union and other socialist bloc countries under rupee-based bilateral trade agreements.

2. Changing commodity base driving new partners: As exports diversified away from traditional agricultural goods toward manufactured goods, gems and jewellery, engineering goods and later IT/software services, India's trading partners also diversified correspondingly.
