Indian planning achieved a diversified economy, food self-sufficiency, expanded infrastructure, and a rise in national income, among other gains.

1. Rise in national and per capita income: Over the plan period, India's national income and per capita income grew substantially compared to the stagnant colonial period.

2. Diversified industrial base: India moved from being a predominantly agrarian, raw-material-exporting economy to developing a broad industrial base spanning steel, heavy machinery, chemicals and later a strong services/IT sector.
