The British built railways, roads, ports and telegraph lines in India, but not for the welfare of Indians. The real objectives were commercial and administrative — moving raw materials and troops, distributing British goods, and controlling the colony. The benefits to Indians were only a by-product.

The concept: infrastructure with a colonial purpose

Some basic infrastructure — railways, ports, water transport, roads, and posts and telegraph — did develop under colonial rule. On the surface this looks like development, but its real motive was to serve British interests, not to provide public amenities to Indians.

The objectives the British intended to achieve

  • Cheap and quick transport of raw materials — railways and roads were built mainly to carry raw materials from India's interior to the ports, from where they could be shipped to Britain.
  • Distribution of British finished goods — the same transport network carried finished British manufactures from the ports into the Indian markets in the interior.
  • Administrative convenience and control — roads and railways helped the government maintain law and order and move troops and officials quickly, tightening British control over the country.
  • The telegraph — the costly telegraph system was developed mainly to serve the purpose of maintaining law and order across the vast territory.
