The service sector has grown fast because of the IT and outsourcing boom, rising incomes and a growing demand for services such as banking, communication, transport, education, health and tourism, and the new opportunities opened up by liberalisation and globalisation. Both strong domestic demand and demand from abroad for Indian services pushed the sector's rapid growth.

The rise of the service sector

During the reform period the service sector, rather than agriculture or industry, has been the fastest growing part of the Indian economy and has contributed the largest share of growth. Several factors are responsible for this.

Major factors

  • Growth of information technology and outsourcing: The expansion of IT and the boom in outsourcing brought large volumes of IT and IT-enabled services, business process work and software services to India, all of which are part of the service sector.
  • Rising demand at home: As incomes rose and the middle class grew, people demanded more services such as banking, insurance, transport, communication, trade, hotels, restaurants, education, health and entertainment. This growing domestic demand expanded the sector.
  • Demand from abroad: There was a strong demand from other countries for services provided by India, especially in software, business services and other outsourced work, which added greatly to the growth of Indian services exports.
  • Liberalisation and globalisation: The opening up of the economy created new opportunities for trade in services and encouraged the entry of private and foreign firms into services such as telecommunications, banking and insurance, all of which grew quickly. …
