Trichophyton is a fungal genus that causes ringworm, one of the commonest fungal skin infections.

Trichophyton (along with related genera Microsporum and Epidermophyton) is a dermatophytic fungus that infects the skin, nails and scalp. It causes ringworm — characterised by dry, scaly lesions on various parts of the body such as the skin, nails and scalp, typically appearing as reddish, ring-shaped patches accompanied by intense itching. Infection is more commonly acquired in hot, humid conditions and can spread through contact with infected persons/animals or through soil, and is aggravated by crowding and poor personal hygiene.
