Ringworm, medically termed dermatophytosis, is a common superficial fungal infection of the skin, scalp or nails, caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, which includes species of Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton; these fungi thrive particularly well in warm, moist areas of the body. The infection produces dry, scaly patches that are intensely itchy, and which typically expand outward as a ring-shaped (annular) lesion with a raised, reddish, actively spreading margin and a relatively clearer centre — a pattern that gives the disease its common name. Ringworm spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal, and also indirectly through shared, contaminated personal items such as towels, combs and clothing; it is more common among people living in crowded, unhygienic, or excessively humid conditions that favour fungal growth.
