Bromoethane converts to diethyl ether by the Williamson ether synthesis: reaction with sodium ethoxide.

Sodium ethoxide (C2H5ONa), generated by treating ethanol with sodium metal, is a strong nucleophile. Its ethoxide ion attacks the electrophilic carbon of bromoethane in an SN2 mechanism, displacing the bromide ion as the leaving group and forming the unsymmetrical/symmetrical ether:

CH3CH2Br+C2H5O−Na+→heatCH3CH2−O−C2H5+NaBrCH_3CH_2Br + C_2H_5O^-Na^+ \xrightarrow{heat} CH_3CH_2-O-C_2H_5 + NaBr
