The Mendius reaction reduces a nitrile (R–C≡N) to a primary amine (R–CH₂–NH₂), classically using sodium metal in ethanol as the reducing agent.

Nitriles can be reduced to primary amines by catalytic hydrogenation (H₂/Ni or Pd), by LiAlH₄, or classically by treatment with sodium metal in absolute ethanol — this specific reduction of a nitrile to a primary amine is known as the Mendius reaction.

Mechanism (overview): the nitrile's C≡N triple bond is progressively reduced (four hydrogen atoms are added across the triple bond) to give the primary amine, with the nitrogen retaining its bond to the same carbon.

R−C≡N→Na/C2H5OH4[H]R−CH2−NH2R-C\equiv N \xrightarrow[\text{Na/C}_2\text{H}_5\text{OH}]{4[H]} R-CH_2-NH_2

Example: Ethanenitrile (acetonitrile) is reduced to ethanamine (ethylamine): …
