Conductivity κ\kappa is conductance per unit length per unit area, giving SI-derived units ohm−1^{-1} cm−1^{-1}.

Conductivity (κ\kappa, also called specific conductance) is defined as the conductance of a solution of 1 cm length and 1 cm2^2 cross-sectional area:

κ=1ρ=lR⋅A\kappa = \frac{1}{\rho} = \frac{l}{R \cdot A}

where RR is resistance (ohm), ll is length (cm), AA is area (cm2^2).

Since conductance =1/R= 1/R has units ohm−1^{-1} (or siemens, S), and κ\kappa multiplies conductance by l/Al/A (units cm/cm2^2 = cm−1^{-1}):

[κ]=ohm−1 cm−1=S cm−1[\kappa] = \text{ohm}^{-1}\,\text{cm}^{-1} = \text{S cm}^{-1} …
