Enzymes are protein biocatalysts that speed up specific reactions by lowering activation energy; their activity is strongly influenced by temperature and pH, each having an optimum beyond which activity falls due to denaturation. Meiosis, in turn, keeps chromosome number constant and generates genetic variation across generations.

Option (a): Enzymes and factors affecting their activity

Enzymes are biological catalysts, almost all of which are proteins (a few are catalytic RNAs, or ribozymes). They speed up the rate of specific biochemical reactions by lowering the activation energy required, without themselves being consumed or permanently altered in the reaction.

  1. Temperature: Enzyme activity generally increases with a rise in temperature up to an optimum (often around 37-40°C for human enzymes); beyond this optimum, activity falls sharply as the enzyme's protein structure begins to denature and lose its functional shape.
  2. pH: Each enzyme has a characteristic optimum pH (frequently close to neutral) at which its activity is maximal; activity decreases as the pH moves away from this optimum in either direction, again due to changes/denaturation of the enzyme's structure.

(Substrate concentration is another important factor: rate of reaction increases with substrate concentration up to a saturation point, Vmax, beyond which the enzyme is fully occupied.)

Option (b): Three significances of meiosis

  1. Chromosome number constancy: Meiosis halves the chromosome number during gamete formation (diploid → haploid), so that upon fertilisation, the diploid chromosome number characteristic of the species is restored and maintained across generations. …
