A chloroplast is bounded by two membranes enclosing the stroma, which houses grana (stacks of thylakoids linked by stroma lamellae) and its own genetic machinery.

Labelled structure of a chloroplast (typically drawn in longitudinal/cross section, lens-shaped or discoid):

  • Outer membrane and inner membrane — two limiting membranes with a narrow intermembrane space between them, together called the chloroplast envelope. The inner membrane regulates passage of materials into and out of the chloroplast.
  • Stroma — the colourless proteinaceous matrix inside the inner membrane; it contains the enzymes of the Calvin cycle (dark reaction), small double-stranded circular DNA, 70S ribosomes, and often starch grains and lipid droplets (plastoglobuli) as storage products.
  • Thylakoids — flattened, membrane-bound sac-like structures suspended in the stroma; a stack of thylakoids resembling a pile of coins is called a granum (plural grana), and the chloroplast contains many grana.
  • Stroma lamellae — flat membranous tubules that connect the thylakoids of one granum to those of another, keeping the whole thylakoid system interconnected. …
