Depending on where the gynoecium sits on the thalamus relative to the other whorls, a flower is hypogynous, perigynous, or epigynous.

The thalamus (receptacle) of a flower may be flat, conical or cup-shaped, and the relative position of calyx, corolla and androecium with respect to the ovary on the thalamus gives three types of insertion:

  • Hypogynous — the gynoecium occupies the highest position on a flat/conical thalamus, with the other floral parts (calyx, corolla, androecium) arising below it. The ovary is said to be superior. Example: mustard, china rose.
  • Perigynous — the gynoecium is situated in the centre and the other floral parts arise from the rim of a cup-shaped thalamus, more or less at the same level as the ovary. The ovary is said to be half-inferior. Example: plum, rose, peach. …
