Chemical synaptic transmission converts an electrical nerve impulse into a chemical signal (neurotransmitter) that crosses the synaptic cleft and re-triggers an electrical signal in the next neuron.

Transmission of a nerve impulse across a chemical synapse occurs in the following sequence:

  1. An action potential (nerve impulse) travels down the axon and reaches the synaptic knob (axon terminal) of the presynaptic neuron.
  2. This depolarisation opens voltage-gated calcium (Ca2+) channels in the presynaptic membrane, allowing Ca2+ to flow into the synaptic knob.
  3. The rise in intracellular Ca2+ causes synaptic vesicles (containing neurotransmitter, e.g. acetylcholine) to move towards and fuse with the presynaptic membrane, releasing the neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft by exocytosis.
  4. The neurotransmitter diffuses rapidly across the narrow synaptic cleft and binds to specific receptor proteins on the postsynaptic membrane. …
