Neurotransmitters chemically relay a nerve impulse across the synaptic gap between two neurons (or between a neuron and its effector).

An electrical nerve impulse cannot physically jump the small gap (synaptic cleft) separating one neuron's axon terminal from the next neuron's dendrite (or from a neuron to a muscle/gland). Instead:

  1. When the electrical impulse (action potential) reaches the pre-synaptic axon terminal, it triggers synaptic vesicles to fuse with the membrane and release a chemical neurotransmitter (e.g. acetylcholine, noradrenaline, dopamine, GABA) into the synaptic cleft.
