Ethylene's key roles include fruit ripening, senescence/abscission, and breaking dormancy.

a. Three important functions of ethylene:

  1. Fruit ripening: Ethylene hastens the ripening of fruits — it increases respiration rate (the 'respiratory climacteric'), and softens fruit texture, converts starches to sugars, and changes fruit colour. It is used commercially to uniformly ripen fruits like mangoes, bananas, and tomatoes.
  2. Senescence and abscission: Ethylene promotes ageing (senescence) of plant parts and the abscission (shedding) of leaves, flowers, and fruits, by weakening the abscission layer at the base of the petiole.
  3. Breaking dormancy / triple response: Ethylene breaks the dormancy of seeds and buds, promoting germination and sprouting. In etiolated pea seedlings it produces the classic 'triple response' — reduced stem elongation, increased stem thickening, and horizontal (diageotropic) growth.

Or b. Three physiological functions of auxin:

  1. Cell elongation: Auxin (e.g., IAA) promotes elongation of cells in the coleoptile and shoot, and is responsible for phototropic and geotropic bending of shoots toward light/against gravity. …
