Internal recruitment is more economical because it saves money on advertising, reduces training costs, and shortens the hiring process, all while leveraging existing employee knowledge.

When a business needs to fill a vacancy, it can look either outside the organisation (external recruitment) or inside it (internal recruitment). Internal sources include promotions, transfers, and rehiring former employees. The NCERT textbook highlights that internal recruitment is considered more economical for several clear reasons.

First, the cost of advertising a job externally can be significant. Newspapers, online job portals, and recruitment agencies all charge fees. Internal recruitment bypasses these expenses entirely. The organisation simply circulates the vacancy notice within the company — through an internal memo, notice board, or company intranet — at virtually no cost. This direct saving on advertising and agency fees is the most obvious economic advantage.

Second, internal recruitment drastically reduces the time and money spent on training. An existing employee already understands the company’s culture, policies, procedures, and informal networks. They know how the organisation works, who the key people are, and what the expectations are. A new external hire, by contrast, needs a period of induction and orientation — often lasting weeks or months — before they become fully productive. That induction period costs money in terms of trainer time, materials, and the new employee’s lower initial output. With internal recruitment, this training cost is minimal or even zero.

Third, the selection process itself is cheaper and faster. The organisation already has detailed performance records, appraisal reports, and firsthand knowledge of an internal candidate’s strengths and weaknesses. There is no need for extensive background checks, reference verifications, or lengthy interviews to assess basic suitability. The hiring manager can make a quicker, more informed decision, saving both time and administrative costs.

Note

The textbook also points out that internal recruitment boosts employee morale and motivation, which indirectly reduces costs related to turnover and absenteeism — though these are secondary economic benefits. …
