(a) Source and how obtained. Heroin is obtained from the poppy plant, Papaver somniferum. Morphine is first extracted from the latex of the poppy's unripe capsules; heroin is then produced by the acetylation (chemical acetylation) of morphine. It is a white, odourless, bitter crystalline compound.
